Scottish singer songwriter Justin Currie is perhaps best known for being the founding member of indie rock band Del Amitri. With Scottish popsters Del Amitri, Currie established a strong reputation for his excellent song-crafting skills and forthright lyrics.
As a solo artist his talents are all the more overt. With nearly a quarter-century of music-making under his belt, Justin Currie is eagerly tackling a wider range of musical endeavours. He speaks of his creative outlook saying “I’m more hedonistic, cynical and corrupt than I was when I started, and less idealistic and nakedly ambitious. But I still want to be heard, I still crave the attention of the crowd, and I’m still a self-obsessed megalomaniac. And I still desperately want to move people; that’s the whole point”.
Currie’s debut solo album ,What Is Love For? (released 2007) features eleven compositions and Currie utilising various instruments alongside a handful of other musicians including Currie’s longtime Del Amitri partner Iain Harvie and fellow Del Amitri alumnus Andy Alston. Most of the album deals with the emotional stages, which ensue romantic breakups: from thwarted desire to lament, anger, disillusionment and detachment. His deeply emotive vocal quality and inventive lyrics are boastful of his ability. What Is Love For? Is a strong debut for Currie, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
Justin Currie will be releasing his new album, titled The Great War on 3rd May 2010, just in time for his UK tour where he will be stopping off to perform at Manchester Club Academy on Thursday 20th May. |
