In 1989, Courtney Love created Hole. Since the birth of the band, the line up has gone through countless alterations, as has the musical style of the band. In their original incarnation, Hole was one of the noisiest, most abrasive alternative bands around at that time (the early nineties). By the time Hole released their sophomore, 1994’s Live Through This, they had smoothed out many of their rougher edges and had begun to incorporate more melodies and hooks to their songwriting. Front-woman Courtney Love’s notorious assaultive persona has always resonated at the forefront of the group’s music and lyrics, giving the band a tense, unpredictable edge.
Live Through This was hailed one of the best records of 1994, the reception of the album from both fans and critics alike was overwhelmingly positive. The album became the band’s commercial breakthrough, spawning several MTV/radio hits and being certified platinum the following year.
Hole’s third album Celebrity Skin, took on a completely new sound for the band being much more pop-orientated. It was a critical success and spawned many hit singles, including ‘Celebrity Skin’, ‘Malibu’ and ‘Awful’.
Hole officially disbanded in 2002, after the split, the four musicians each took on projects of their own. Erlandson continued to work as a producer and session musician, eventually forming the experimental group RRIICCEE with Vincent Gallo. Love began her solo career, releasing her debut America’s Sweetheart in 2004 and is currently working on her second studio album, Out Of Our Minds.
In late 2009 Courtney Love announced the reunion of Hole. March 16th 2010 saw the release of the first Hole single in ten years, titled ‘Skinny Little Bitch’. The single preceded the release of the band’s new album Nobody’s Daughter, which saw its release on 27th April 2010. The album has so far received extremely positive reviews, praising Hole for their ability to create such a rich and emotionally strong collection of tracks.
Hole will be performing live at Manchester Academy on Friday 7th May. |
